By hook or by crook. Somehow or other, one way or other, in one way or another, some means or other.

By one’s self.

    1. Alone, solitary.

By-path, n.

    1. By-way, side-path.
    2. Private way, secret path, devious way, indirect course, crooked means.

By-place, n. Retired place, out-of-the-way place.

By-purpose, n. See by-end.

By-road, n. Private road, unfrequented road.

By-room, n. Private room. See cabinet.

By rote. Mechanically, perfunctorily, parrot-like, by mere repetition, without any exercise of the understanding, with no attention to the meaning.
