Perhaps most chillingly, Auschwitz survivor and pre- eminent writer on the Holocaust Primo Levi has described how Hitler contaminated a nation by refusing them access to the truth - the holocaust was brought about by a wholesale 'Orwellian' twisting of history, science and fact to justify the extermination of a whole race. He concluded that 'the entire history of the brief "millennial Reich" can be reread as a war against memory, an Orwellian falsification of reality.'
