Carocium, the banner of the Milanese, having for device “St. Ambrose,” the patron saint of Milan. It was mounted on an iron tree with iron leaves, and the summit of the tree was surmounted by a large cross. The whole was raised on a red harness. Mass was always said before the car started, and Guinefolle tells us, “tout la cérémonie était une imitation de l’arche d’alliance des Israélites.”
