PRIEST to PRIZE

PRIEST.—Led so grossly by this meddling priest,
Dreading the curse that money may buy out.

Shakespeare.—King John, Act III. Scene 1.

PRINCES.—Princes and lords may flourish, or may fade;
A breath can make them, as a breath has made:
But a bold peasantry, their country’s pride,
When once destroy’d, can never be supplied.

Goldsmith.—Deserted Village, Line 53.

PRINCIPLES.—And oftener chang’d their principles than
shirt.

Young.—Epi. I. To Pope on the Authors of the Age.

PRIOR.—Nobles and heralds by your leave,
Here lies what once was Matthew Prior;
The son of Adam and of Eve;
Can Bourbon or Nassau claim higher?

Prior.—Epitaph.

To me ’twas given to die: to thee ’tis given
To live: alas! one moment sets us even.
Mark! how impartial is the will of heaven!

Prior.—For his Tombstone.

PRISON.—Stone walls do not a prison make,
Nor iron bars a cage,
Minds innocent and quiet, take
That for an hermitage.

Lovelace.—To Althea from Prison; 2 Percy Rel.343.

A prison is a house of care,
A place where none can thrive;
A touchstone true to try a friend,
A grave for one alive;
Sometimes a place of right,
Sometimes a place of wrong,
Sometimes a place of rogues and thieves,
And honest men among.

Anonymous.—Inscription in Edinburgh Tolbooth.

If lovers, Cupid! are thy care,
Exert thy vengeance on this fair,
To trial bring her stolen charms,
And let her prison be my arms.

Earl Of Egremont.—The Fair Thief; from Collett.

You shall have no worse prison than my chamber,
Nor jailer than myself.

The Captain.—Scott, Peveril of the Peak, Chap. VI.

Such prisons are beyond all liberty.

Suckling.—Brennoralt, Act IV.

Prison’d in a parlour, snug and small,
Like bottled wasps upon a southern wall.

Cowper.—Retirement, Line 493.

PRIZE.—We soonest lost what we most highly prize,
And with our youth our short-liv’d beauty dies.

Roscommon.—Guarini’s Pastor Fido.
