    2. Contrive, excogitate, invent, work out.

Hammer and tongs. (Colloquial expression used adverbially.) Strenuously, vigorously, earnestly, zealously, resolutely, energetically, with all one’s might, with might and main, tooth and nail, through thick and thin, through fire and water, pugnis et calcibus.
