1781, June: Together with John Jay and Thomas Jefferson, joins John Adams to negotiate peace with England, the definitive terms of which he and the others sign in Paris on September 3, 1783.

1784: During this year resumes work on his Autobiography, broken off in 1771.

1785, September: Greeted by a large crowd upon his return to Philadelphia. The next month is elected president of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania.

April: Elected president of the Pennsylvania Society for the Abolition of Slavery.

1787, May: Begins acting as Pennsylvania delegate to the Constitutional Convention; makes the closing speech at the Convention on September 17.

1790, April 17: Dies in Philadelphia at the age of eighty-four.
